The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority took a major leap forward in awarding large contracts for projects in and outside of the $2.6 billion master plan.
During the Thursday morning meeting, the airport's largest contract went to Hensel Phelps Construction Co. for its next phase of the master plan.
Hensel Phelps Construction Co., which was the lowest bidder with the contract being just over $66 million, landed a deal with the airport for site development of the 35-acre SkyCenter project for infrastructure to support the future office tower, commercial real estate development, an atrium with a roof terrace and pedestrian bridge connecting the Rental Car Center to the office building, and extension of the Rental Car Center's commercial curb to accommodate expanding bus operations.
At full build out, there would be a hotel, an office building, an option for a second building, and connections to regional trail networks. The entire project for the atrium, SkyCenter and pedestrian bridge is expected to cost roughly $121 million. The start date for the project is January 2019 with the majority of the completion being done by May 2020.
